Julie Abraham

South Hunsley

I have been proud to represent South Hunsley Ward since 2003 during which time I have enjoyed the challenge of various committees covering numerous services delivered by the council including waste, street scene, flood prevention, community safety and planning and building control. Latterly, I have been a member of the Conservative Cabinet with the portfolio for children, young people and education. This broad portfolio involves me in all aspects of the council’s work with children and young people including children’s safeguarding and social care, support for those with special educational needs and disabilities, their health and well-being and the performance of our 150 schools and academies. As a Ward councillor I work well with my fellow member and we complement each other’s strengths well.

My family has been raised in North Ferriby where they have attended local maintained schools and I am currently a governor of the primary school in the village. I have been a member of North Ferriby Parish Council for 22 years and during that time have faced a variety of issues including significant and frequent surface water flooding and a tidal surge and I have challenged some high-profile planning applications for waste management facilities and large-scale housing developments. I have developed good relationships with partner agencies and have been instrumental in obtaining substantial investment for flood protection works, including a £2.2m drainage scheme by Yorkshire Water and works by the Environment Agency on both sides of the village to reduce the risk of flooding in the event of further tidal surges.

I have worked alongside my other parish councils, Swanland and Welton, and together we have dealt with many issues over the years in support of the communities we represent. Most recent projects have been the fight to retain a GP surgery in Swanland and to challenge the expansion of waste processing activities in Melton.

I know it is important for the residents of Swanland, Melton, Welton and North Ferriby to be able to live in a safe, clean environment, to have good educational facilities, appropriate career opportunities, access to health, leisure and cultural facilities and to be able to remain active and independent as they reach their senior years, after which they want to be cared for in a setting that suits them. If I am re-elected on 2nd May I shall strive to achieve just that for all my residents.
